Hsu Tishan has been considered to be one of the most characteristic writers in themodern literary history of China.His literary creations show a strong religious atmosphereand exotic colors, and they embody the ultimate concern about earthly mortals. In this thesis，I select a different angle from that of the previous research, trying to account for theuniqueness of Hsu Tishan’s works. Namely, by close reading of the text, I’m trying to finddestructive factors, such as fickle love, egoism, knowledge center and the authoritative center.Meanwhile, I try to discover the inner clue from deconstruction to reconstruction.Furthermore, the contemporary significance of benevolence, tolerance and coexistence whichis reflected in Hsu’s works will be clarified.The uniqueness of Hsu Tishan’s works comes from his thorough knowledge and richexperience. It is his research in Buddhism and Taoism that brings in his metaphysical uniqueunderstanding to the world and the meaning of life. He involuntarily pursues the loftiness anddivinity in his spiritual world. On one hand, Hsu enthusiastically eulogizes true love, and onthe other hand, he reveals the selfish side of love from a religious angle, hoping to help peoplebe freed from excessively selfish love and turn to loving others with anatman. Based on this,Hsu thus attempts to collapse the personal center. He deeply realizes that jumping out of thevicious circle of the self center, a person may gradually put down selfish desires, stay calm,dispel the grievances and swerve to altruism. In addition, from the cultural angle, in thebackground of confucianist theory being deconstructed, Hsu Ti-shan was able to deconstructforeign cultures far-sightedly and discover positive ethics among the earthly mortals so as toestablish a reasonable outlook on life. In short, the effort in reconstructing human’s spiritualvalues made by Hsu Ti-shan plays a considerable role not only in perfecting individualpersonality and morality, but also in optimizing social fashion and opening multiple dialogues.Therefore, such attempt helps promote a harmonious China and a better world.
