Humans recognize objects rapidly. Some kinds of traditional theory of the sequence of visual process argue that the occurrence of categorization is based upon the accomplishment of detection. That is to say, detection precedes categorization. However, this kind of issue is beginning to be unclear more and more, since many researchers have offered various kinds of answer by different experimental methods and through many study angles. The point of their argument is that which one goes firstly, detection and categorization. Grill-Spector and Kanwisher have finished a kind of innovation research in2005, whose points challenge traditional theories. They believed that categorization was not based on detection, and two kinds of ability were in the same cognitive process. The different opinion came from the research of Mack and Gauthier in2008. They were in favor of that sometimes you know it is there before you know what it is. Their point came back to the line of traditional theory of visual processing. Because they believed that detection and categorization are totally different two kinds of steps of cognition. However, an article named Origins of the Left&Right Brain which came from Scientific American brought us the new angles to research. The authors summarized some kinds of point from researches of animal’s behavior and neural mechanism. They argued that the different cerebral dominance have been found in animal’s brain through the long time evolution and the choice of nature. For example, the left brain was in charge of accomplishment of categorization; the right one controlled processing of detection.Based on the arguments above, the purpose of my research is to find the difference between detection and categorization with two phases of sequence of processing steps and cerebral dominance. There are three kinds of experiment in my research as follows.Experiment1is to ask participants to finish some kinds of categorization task. The purpose of this experiment is to observe and study the similar and different action from participants with two kinds of superior level category:animal and artificiality. In the task of animal, participants need to tell dog from bird and butterfly; in the task of artificiality, participants need to tell car from plane and boat. The result tells us that participants have the same action with animal and artificiality category. Experiment1offers a kind of standard for subsequent researches.Experiment2repeats Grill-Spector and Kanwisher’s research in2005. The main problem waiting to be solved is that which one goes firstly, detection and categorization? The method and materials are consistent of Grill-Spector and Kanwisher’s research. The date indicates that there is no difference between detection and categorization. This kind of result is same to Grill-Spector and Kanwisher’s study in2005.Experiment3is the most important part in my research. The study angle of this part is cerebral dominance with two kinds of cognitive processing:detection and categorization. Researcher uses some methods as tachistoscopic visual half-field technique and interfering task to check whether the point of Categorization for Left, Detection for Right is correct. The date of this experiment tells us that the stimuli, which appear in participants’left visual field or right visual filed, have different interfering effects between detection and categorization. This kind of result supports the point of Categorization for Left, Detection for Right sufficiently.Generally speaking, there is a kind of closely connection among these three experiments. The occurrence of subsequence experiment is based upon the accomplishment of anterior one. They have the common purpose to find similar and different action from participants with two phases of processing steps and cerebral dominance in the task of detection and categorization. There are four kinds of conclusion in my research as follows.(1)Participants have the same action between animal category task and artificiality category task. In another word, these two kinds of superior level categorization have the similar affection on the task of Experiment1.(2) Experiment2repeats Grill-Spector and Kanwisher’s research. The date indicated that there is no difference between detection task and categorization task. So, the result of Grill-Spector and Kanwisher’s research is worth being trustful.(3)There are two different kinds of interfering effects in detection task and categorization task. That is to say, the phenomenon of Categorization for Left, Detection for Right is existent.(4)Combining two kinds of result from Experiment2and Experiment3, researcher find that different experiment design will result in different conditions of two cognitive processing:detection and categorization. We cannot conclude that detection and categorization are finished in different hemisphere at the same time. So, we need to use batter experimental methods to obtain batter answers for the argument which we concern with. |
