In2007, the British woman writer Doris Lessing won the Nobel Prize, and one ofher best-known work The Golden Notebook can be seen as her autobiography. TheGolden Notebook is the book which deserves the thorough studying because its theme, structure and narration methods all embody the features of post modernism novelswhich are totally different from the traditional ones. The essay here tries to analyzethe post modernity of The Golden Notebook from the aspects of the features of thepost modernism, such as the post modernism narrative strategies, the meta-fictionnarration and the indeterminacy of the book.In the first chapter, the essay mainly analyzes the post modernism narrationstrategies of the book. In the book The Golden Notebook, the author Lessing uses thepost modernism narration strategies such as the nonlinear narrative structure, thedescription of symbol dream, the fragmental narration time, the parody, the montageand collage. In the second chapter, the essay analyzes the meta-fiction narration of the book. The post modernism meta-fiction applies a great deal of different narration strategies. The meta-fiction tries to form the reverse narrative system from the entire narrativestructure. The meta-fiction can be explained as the novel about the novel, and can befurther subdivided into three kinds of novels: the novel about how the novel becomesa novel; the novel about the previous novel; and the text-like meta-fiction. The bookThe Golden Notebook reveals the fiction and the irony of the book itself. The bookexposes the trace of artistic processing to the readers intentionally. The book revealsthe fiction and the sham of the narrative world. So the basic foothold of the novelcannot form the authenticity through the imitation of the real world and the innerworld. The book The Golden Notebook parodies the previous literary works, so thebook can be seen as the novel about the previous novel. Lessing believes the creation is the most valuable worth of the literary work, and she manages to find way to get ridof the influence of the traditional literature so as to reject the restriction of thetradition on the literary creation and to rewrite the old stories with the post modernismidea to form unique new story. In the third chapter, the essay analyzes the indeterminacy of the book, which isone notable feature of the post modernism. In the book, the characters are dispelled, for the author never describes the characters logically or systematically. The book TheGolden Notebook is a great work having the features of arbitrariness, improvisationand collage. The indeterminacy of the book also lies in the structure of the novel. Thefunction of the structure to serve the content of the novel is collapsed. In the book, thecontent turns into the explanation and the clue of the structure. Obviously, the bookThe Golden Notebook embodies the post modernity everywhere.
