Body’s distance between a teacher and students is one kind of silent languages in the class. How to look upon the body’s distance between a teacher and students and how to deal with it, is one of concerns of teachers of Chinese as a foreign language. According to the collected data from students in The College of International Cultural Exchange, Central China Normal University by questionnaire survey and oral survey and classroom observation of40classes, this paper discusses how to grasp the body’s distance between a teacher and students in the class, and its revelatory and instructional effect to the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.The measurement and calculation of the body’s distance between a teacher and students in the class are introduced in Chapter2. The procedures are made up of the proposed formula, the process of measure, and then the result of it, including the size of Body’s distance between a teacher and students, and the analysis of the position of the teacher through the diagram.Junior overseas students of the College of International Cultural Exchange, Central China Normal University come from different countries, whose opinions are presented in Chapter3. Students of different ages, of different culture, of different levels of Chinese and different training objectives hold different views. Students who are younger do not often notice the distance between a teacher and students; students of high level of Chinese pay extra attention to this issue; students of Foundation have heavy academic pressure, so they just pay little attention to this issue.The teachers are categorized into four groups in Chapter4, namely teachers of different ages, teachers of different genders, and teachers who have overseas teaching experience and who only teach inland, teachers who are green hand and who are old hand. Teachers who are elder pay more attention to the distance between a teacher and students in the class than the ones who are young; female teachers and male teachers also hold different views to this issue, teachers who have overseas teaching experience give special concern to this issue; teachers who are green don’t notice this issue.Chapter5analyses the reason of different body distance between a teacher and students and effect to the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language The effect presented from such four aspects as teaching efficiency, teacher quality, classroom atmosphere and relations between students and teachers. If teachers can control the distance between themselves and students, for one thing, it can guarantee the smooth conduct of classroom teaching and create good classroom atmosphere to gain good teaching result; for another thing, it can reflect abilities of a teacher and improve the relations between students and teachers.Chapter6lists two contributions of this paper. First, this paper did a good case study and obtained plenty of statistical data. Second, it is a research specialized in body’s distance between a teacher and students in teaching Chinese to foreign students. It uses scientific demarcation method to measure this distance from qualitative aspect.
