Due to Oscar Wilde’s ideology of carpe diem and regardlessness of traditionalmorality, his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray faced controversy from the start. In general, scholars at home and abroad have mainly studied his aesthetic ideologyand the discussion of moral sense reflected in the novel. However, studies on theinfluence of Wilde’s homosexual life on his literary creations are few. This studyintends to reveal the double psychological appeals of being recognized and beingaccepted in The Picture of Dorian Gray. In order to do so, in light of BiographicalCriticism, the researcher analyzes the text and compares Wilde’s life and his creation, hoping to detect this connection and to understand his hardship and internal pain asa homosexual, living and creating under the mask. The study finds out that all thecontroversies of Wilde’s art and his personal life are almost reflected in this novel. For art, he is eager to get recognition so that under the mask of art he may make thepublic believe that he is leading a normal but nobler life. For homosexual life, he hasan implied appeal for approval and acceptance of his personal life that he himselfdeems graceful and noble as an artist. |
