Status Survey And Conservation Strategy Of Folk Music And Dance Of Mang People

As the important manifestation of the culture and life of Mang People (the localminorities) together with the fruits of their diligence and wisdom, Mang’s music anddances embody their culture, customs, taboo, social structure and norms of etiquette.Combing the folk music and dances is benefit to Mang’s social civilization as well asthe recognition of culture. It is essential to protect folk music and dances becausewhat we protect is actually Mang’s cultural custom and social institution.Based on the existing literature, this paper defined three basic elements—instruments, music and dance—of Mang’s music and dances first. By on-the-spotinvestigating two Mang’s villages in Jinping County of Honghe prefecture, itconfirmed two Mang’s instruments—láilóng and gaōng, five categories of Mang’smusic—Genesis, ballad, custom song, dance music, instrumental music and fivebasic forms of dancing—males dance, females dance, mixed dance, double dance,Lailong dance. It further analyzed Mang’s instruments together with its makingprocess, classified tune and lyrics of Mang’s music, recognized and categorizedMang’s dancing movements, and analyzed the art features of Mang’s music alongwith dances in perspective of element-mixture. Besides, it defined the culturalconnotation of Labor, Immitation, and Witchcraft embodied in music and dances. Inaddition, it posed that Mang’s music and dances is closely related to labor, whichpresented the imitation of movement and habits of beasts, hunting and padlock aswell as the worship to totem of all earthy creatures. This paper analyzed the artfeatures in perspectives of mental activity, process of movement and outcomes ofmovement, and analyzed the social functions in view of aesthetics, recognition,education and entertainment respectively, at last, it suggested several ways on how toprotect Mang’s music and dances from maintenance, passing on and educationperspectivesBecause of the limits of existing literature and authors’ research ability, there arecertain flaws existing in this paper. What’s more, the protection of scientific strategy is to be tested, and we will improve and further it in the follow-up study.
