| Abbas Kiarostami has been considered as a flag bearer in the development ofcontemporary Iranian film industry. His film Where Is the Friend’s Home?（1987）attracted international attention by its unique aesthetic concept and visual angle,therefore it helped Iranian film stepped into international field of vision.Where Is the Friend’s Home?（1987） caused a huge impact in the world filmindustry. It gained Teheran International Film Festival’s Grand Prize, CannesInternational Film Festival’s Art Film Prize, and Locarno International Film Festival’sbronze prize. In the following years，Abbas Kiarostami directed several excellent workssuch as Close-Up, And Life Goes on..., Taste of Cherry, and The Wind Will Carry Us.They continuously succeed at the major film festivals. Since then a new tide of studyingIranian film has been emerged all around the world.Through the narrative space and time which is constructed by his specializedcamera language，Abbas Kiarostami places the stories of those at the very bottom inIran into his film. By the poetic composition with natural style, and the mise en scenefits perfectly the plot, he delivers his ideological core precisely, which reveals thephilosophical thinking of survival. The deepening of Abbas Kiarostami’s ideologicalcore always with the help of well-arranged visualization model motive power, forinstance, the choice of scenes, the saturation information in the scheduling for the longlens, the relation between characters’ actions, the notion of composition, the schedulingof shot, and the musicalized sound effect. In his films, Abbas Kiarostami forges aunique continuity with visualized information and ideological core.This dissertation is divided into four parts:In the first part，the author will give an introduction to Iranian film industry’sbackground, combined with the reality of Iran’s society, such as religiousconsciousness, film censorship, and several significant eras of Iranian films. The authorwill analyze the factors that influent Abbas Kiarostami’s films, through the perspectivesof the changing of the society, the national culture, and the aesthetic orientation. Bystating the brief history of Iranian film industry’s eras: the beginning time, the newwave, and the time after Iranian Revolution, the author will make a clear view of thedevelopment of the Iranian film industry.In the second part, the author will give an introduction to Abbas Kiarostami and his works. By analyzing the Iranian director’s personal experience, view of life, andaesthetics orientation, it is verified that his works can be divided into different times.Then the author will study Abbas Kiarostami’s films, such as Bread and Alley, Where Isthe Friend’s Home?, Taste of Cherry, and The Certified Copy which are directed in thedirector’s different times. Abbas Kiarostami has been gathering experience since hisshort films; his very first full-length film forged the artistic style of Iranian film after itgained international recognition. The author arguing that Abbas Kiarostami’s films aremore focused on grand narrative in these days, they try to explore multiple visual stylesand they also try to discuss the problem of cross-culture by getting back to the dramafilm genre. One in all, the camera language in Abbas Kiarostami’s films is in a trendthat continues to develop and evolve, on the perspective of aesthetics.In the third part, the author will summarize the characteristics in AbbasKiarostami’s films, it includes: the continuity, the motif of human nature, the meaningunderlying the context, the narrative form which combined of emptiness and reality,thevisualized structure, the poetic pursuit of composition, and the picture concept.In the fourth part, the author will analyze the significance of Abbas Kiarostami’sfilms. By Summing up the unique features of his films, the author will conclude thereasons why Abbas Kiarostami’s films made a huge impact. Hopefully, this dissertationwill provide some beneficial effects for Chinese film industry. |
