| The Boxer Movement occurred in changed the course of history of modern China,caused an unprecedented upheaval in modern Chinese society, causing dramatic changes inforeign relations. As a communicational bridge between China and foreign countries,envoys played a more or less, or light or heavy role during this period. This paper intendsto conduct a study on diplomatic envoys during the Boxer Movement. By analyzingenvoys’ state of mind, strain attitude and specific political behavior, I want to explorediplomatic envoys’ thoughts during this period.The first part mainly analyzes the basic situation of diplomatic envoys during theperiod. It is divided into two areas: the first aspect is the modernization’s transformation ofthe late Qing-dynasty and the establishment of diplomatic embassies collar system, focusedon the transformation of China’s diplomacy with foreign countries established diplomaticrelations in modern times. The second aspect is the basic situation of the Boxer Movementperiod, including personal background, knowledge structure and foreign quality,constituted the purpose of the basic characteristics of this special period.The second part analyzes the strain attitude and practice of foreign diplomaticrepresentations during the period of the Boxer Movement. Important events during theBoxer Movement Qing government to declare war, make-feeding and password to saveelectricity, mutual Southeast, and Northeast armistice negotiations. two chaptersrespectively introduce envoys’ state of mind, strain attitude, understanding of the role andstatus of this period of history.The third part mainly analysis envoys’ diplomatic thought during the period of theBoxer Movement. It is divided into three sections to study: the first one is a peacefuldiplomacy. Resloving the conflict among countries in a peaceful way is the theresponsibility and mission of envoys. They committed against the war diplomacy. But inthe face of Western powers, swollen with arrogance, they have to make compromises andconcessions. The second is the thought of international law. As the beginning of China’s modern diplomacy, it is an important symbol. It promotes the modernization of China’sdiplomacy. However, the use of international law in the late Qing Dynasty is not matureand not very successful during the period of the Boxer Movement. The third is the "balanceof power" diplomacy. This is one of the western modern diplomatic. As the envoy of theUnited States, skilled application of Wu Tingfang contributed to the late Qing diplomacyand international standards.The last part reviews envoys’ attitude and behavior during the period of the BoxerMovement. In addition, it makes reflection of the late Qing dynasty diplomatic system. |
