| This report is basically based on a steady flow of the surveys and study on thesituation of Middle Asian women, conducted from social, religious, cultural andpolitical aspects of the post-Soviet Middle Asian countries. And these literatures aremostly formed by several doctoral essays and some collections of journal report ofthe social and political situations in countries from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan,Tajikistan and Kirgizstan.As being a student of MTI, it is quite important to not only learn translationtheories but also to learn translating craft and to accumulate experience throughplenty practice of translation work. Basing on English to Chinese translation of thesurvey on Middle Asian women, the author of this paper discusses the unique socialand cultural characteristics of the names of the Middle Asians, the translationprinciples and theories particularly on names, as well as the instruction in translatingprocess from aspects including preparation before translating, theories and principlestudies, case studies and conclusion, in order to present a better work.As it’s known to all, the names of the middle Asians have their unique and specialcharacteristics and carry their implied meaning socially, religiously and culturally.Taking all these aspects into consideration, it is extremely for a translator to realizethe importance of name translation. It is also necessary and indispensable for atranslator to study the overall situation and information of this region before he/shemake the final decision on translating names.In this report paper, the author has exemplified the basic translation principles andtheories on name-translation. And under these principles and theories, the author hasgiven her thoughts and experiences on this particular area of translation. And finally,the author has stated her doubts and difficulties in the process of translation. Also, acomprehensive understanding of the overall situation of this region is suggested bythe author to anyone who is willing to translate any literature or essays connected tothis special region. When translating this kind of reports and essays, translatorsshould pay great attention especially to the differences between the Chinese andEnglish language, translation procedure and techniques. The author hopes that thisreport is of some referential value of the translation related to the documents ofsimilar types. |
