Altay region of Xinjiang, China, boarders with Mongolia and Russia to the north,and Khasakstan to the west. Stone men and stone deer, found almost throughout Asiaand Europe grasslands, makes up an important part in prehistoric archaeologicalremains, which are most densely found in the Altay region. They also representprehistoric prairie culture. Most researchers regard Stone men and Stone deer as acultural legacy of shamanism, but few scholars seek the link of Shamanism andStone deer and Stone men, nor how the link may be expressed. There have also beenfew discussions on the links between the deer drawn in rock pictures and the deer inthe form of sculpture, nor on the arise, evolution and development of the Stone menand Stone deer.Based on previous archaeological surveys and excavations, and related researchresults, this essay will collect collating relevant materials, sort them out andintroduce them to supply a whole picture of surveys on Stone men and Stone deer.It will also make further analysis on issues such as the relation between the Mightydeer drawn in rock drawings and the Stone deer, the origin of Altay Stone men, andthe Shamanist belief reflected by them.
