Through theoretical perspective and criticism method ofcomparative literature,this paper studies translation ofSienkiewicz’s works in China during the first half of the20thcentury.While combing and analyzing the translation,this paperexplores the reason and purpose’s achievement in translation ofZhou Zuoren,Wang Luyan and Shi Zhecun,each of which isrepresentative of specific period.It reaches characteristics abouttranslation of Sienkiewicz’s works in China during the first halfof the20th century that translation works are almost novelettesand short stories and translators are almost writers.Then ithighlights that there is a great relationship between translatedliterature and politics.Furthermore,it is hard for people torealize the great value of non-mainstream translated literature.Chapter one introduces the first stage’s germination of1906-1914’s translation at the beginning,then it analyzes thereason that Zhou Zuoren translated Sienkiewicz’s works during thisperiod.The subjective reason was to reflect and improve the socialstatus of China,and inspiring people to face the reality andconfront the reality.The objective reason was that his translatedchoice was influenced by Brandes and Lu Xun.But Zhou Zuoren didn’t achieve his translated purpose because of the people’s aestheticexpectation and the translator’s popularity.Chapter two combs theclimax stage’s translation from1915to1928at the beginning,thenit analyzes the reason and the result that Wang Luyan and Zhou Zuorentranslated Sienkiewicz’ s works during this period.With LuXun,Literature Research Society and Esperanto learning’ spromoting,based on his high praise on Sienkiewicz’s works,WangLuyan recognized that Sienkiewicz’s works could not only express feelings perfectly,but also soothe people’s soul in reality.So hechose to translate Sienkiewicz’s works.His translations benifitedfrom the published newspapers and periodicals,and failed to thetranslator’ s popularity and underappreciated non-mainstreamoppressed peoples work.With the influence of Brandes,Lu Xun,The NewYouth and Literature Research Society,Zhou Zuoren paid moreattention to the artistic value of the works relative to thepolitical function in translated reason during thisperiod.Although the published newspapers and periodicals and thetranslator’s popularity became advantages of purpose’s achievementin translation,non-mainstream feature of disadvantaged peoplesliterature affected purpose’s achievement in translation.Chapterthree concludes that translation of Sienkiewicz’s works in Chinashows extension stage like subtle fragrance floating from1929to1949.Influenced by Mao Dun and so on,Shi Zhecun hoped to stimulatepeople’s patriotism and national consciousness by translatingSienkiewicz’s works.The reprint or the translator’s popularityboth made sense for Shi Zhecun to reach his purpose of translationwhich was hampered by the war.
