As a writer, religion researcher and translator, Dishan Xu is one of a very fewwriters in modern Chinese literature like this. His own experience and character, theinfluence of eaten and west literature, and the rich knowledge are the facts which leadto the special creation of Xu’s novels. His works reflect the religious doctrine ofBuddhism(life and fate),Taoism(nature and humanity)and Christian(sacrifice andsave),and also the spirit of “Peanut”(to be a useful man),which eventually builds therelief of “Reason and love”. As a writer, Dishan Xu tried to find a creative way toconnect religion and literature.“Romantic” and “Realistic” are the two main featuresin his novels under the leading of religion doctrines. But they aren’t balanced in hisnovels by stages. Xu’s novels in earlier period are more “romantic” than “realistic”and his novels in later period are more realistic and pay much attention to the life ofsome humble people and revolutionists. That shows how Dishan Xu strugglesbetween “ideality” and “reality”,“art” and “life”. It proves that he starts to save thesociety than to balance his own heart and relief through writings. And I try to showyou that the “Realistic core” and “Romantic sentiment” are the consistent character ofXu’s novels based on the literature background of Chinese literature in20thcentury.And how it enriches the modern Chinese literature. The essay is divided into fourchapters. The first chapter is trying to show you what are “romantic” and “realistic”feature in Chinese literature in20thto40thcentury. And what are they refer to in thisessay. The second chapter analysis the “romantic” feature of Xu’s novels under theguide of religious relief. Then the third chapter will show you the “realistic” featureof Xu’s novels under the guide of religious relief. The final chapter will show thereason why “romantic” and “realistic” feature are always exist in Xu’s novels in thesame time and points out the importance of this essay’s values.
