Painting and clothing belong to two different areas of artistic subjects, but both are indispensablesince figure painting was shown. Based on the real life, the artists depicted the person who were froma variety of social strata in life drastically. It reflected the aesthetic and the painting characteristic atthat time. And in these paintings, the making of the overall character costume provides plenty ofpicture material. This thesis intends to analyze the transitions from the clothing to the clothing in the“image”(as the painting) in the light of painting. Take the paintings in the French Rococo for instance,it could help to develop insights on painting artistic language from this angle of painting. Clothingwas inseparably connected with paintings. On the basis of analyzing the relationship between the two,it is the starting point of this paper that research into this relationship to penetrate the charactercostume in painting.Paintings and clothing arts grew just as civilization advance. In general, clothing is anaccompaniment of people. And it carries with the intension of a culture and produces the effect inportrait painting. Thus, it could not be replaced by any other things for that matter. In the modernworld, with the evolving modern civilization and the public’s diversified demands on the esthetic. Thediversified clothing is in a state of growth and prosperity continuously. In short, it must be instilled anew courage into the portrait painting for future development.
