The modernist writer D.H. Lawrence is a writer with profound life consciousnessand concern of humankind. He is greatly concerned with man and nature and with thedehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization. Lawrence finds with his keeneye lots of social problems together with the development of the British industrialrevolution and he exposes and attacks them in a unique way in his literary creations,especially aiming at the destruction of natural environment and human harmoniousrelationships from machine civilization of capitalism. In his works he uses mythallusions as special writing method and treats myth creation as a parody to mock themodern morbid society and as a powerful weapon to subvert traditional power. Theother writhers may use myths to describe the world while Lawrence uses myths to savethe world. He links the way of saving human together with his idea that he uses way ofmyth to impel human beings revert to the most original belief and recover the truestnature.This thesis studies the ecological thoughts of myths in D.H. Lawrence’s LoveTrilogy within the framework of eco-criticism and mythical criticism. The thesis beginswith the discussion of the relationship between myth and ecology as leading-in part,through the relationships between myth and natural ecology, myth and social ecologyand myth and spiritual ecology and tries to show that myth as ancient treasure ofthoughts contains the original ecological ideas of early human beings. Then the thesisdiscusses the relationship between Lawrence and myth to illustrate that Lawrence’s useof myths to narrate stories is not random at all but with a purpose. During the formationof Lawrence’s myth complex, his family, the religion and the society of his time allinfluenced him a lot. Based on the analysis foundation of myth and ecology andLawrence’s myth complex, the thesis makes a deliberate study of myths in the LoveTrilogy, Lawrence’s highest achievements of novels to show that Lawrence uses mythsin order to coordinate the relations between man and nature and man and woman. The thesis tries to argue that Lawrence with myths in the Love Trilogy to show that thehuman-nature relationship should be maintained in awe and unification and the puresexual relations between man and woman are effective ways to save the corruptingworld human’s souls.To study D.H. Lawrence’s ecological thoughts from the perspective of mythpresents a different approach to understand Lawrence’s writing techniques and his ideaof ecological values. It can also give people a moral reminder that the ecologicalharmony with nature is our ultimate concern.
