In the scope of film history study, film in occupied Shanghai refers to the specificfilm-producing activities done by Chinese film makers who lived in Shanghai from the breakingout of Pacific War on8th Dec1941to the victory of the Anti-Japanese War on15thApr1945,under the directed or undirected control of Japanese intruders and the Puppet Regime.Unlike painting, poems and songs, one of the important characteristics of film which differfrom the other artistic forms was that it has high requirement to its making environment and strongdependence to technological, material and social cultural atmosphere and the artistic thought ofthe creating personnel.So, when the War of Resistance against Japan broke out, the social environment changedgreatly and the film got stroked greatly. From another point of view, because of the reasonmentioned above, the state of the existence of film industry can reflect the historical environmentof one epoch most and it is a reduction of the development of the history of the society. Thetwisted developing film industry in occupied Shanghai reflected the complicated socialenvironment of Shanghai. To study film in occupied Shanghai is of great historic meaning for thepurpose of fulfilling Chinese film history.This thesis is divided into five chapters which are the basic comment and summary to thefilm of Shanghai. Chapter One summarizes the origin of this thesis and current study bothdomestic and abroad; Chapter Two introduces the social background like politics, economics andculture in occupied Shanghai; Chapter Three summarizes the process that Japanese colonistsgradually controlled Shanghai film industry from the prospect of film history; Chapter Fouraddresses the way that film in occupied Shanghai reflects the cultural policy of the Puppet Regime;Chapter Five introduces those Shanghai film makers’ way to protest the colonist government andtheir fate after the war; Chapter Six addresses the heritage of Film in Occupied Shanghai, and thenconcludes the historical and the practical meaning of the film of Shanghai in the time of War ofResistance against Japan.This thesis observes the relation between the film industry and social life of occupiedShanghai on the basis of admitting that Film in Occupied Shanghai was the fruit of militaryintruding and cultural colonist, and then concludes that the political consciousness had greatlyinfluenced the entertaining choice of Shanghai films. In addition, this thesis has also observed theprotest of Shanghai film makers under the colonial domination and the heritage of Film inOccupied Shanghai left in the Chinese film history.
