A Study Of The Translation Strategies And Skills Of Trans-editing Ao-men Hsin-wen-chih From The Perspective Of Translator’s Subjectivity And Intersubjectivity

Ao-men Hsin-wen-chih, as the earliest translated newspaper in China, was a significantturning point in the development of Chinese newspapers and periodicals. Lin Zexu came toGuangdong in1839to conduct the ban on opium trade. He organized a translation team toselect and translate news and comments in foreign newspapers published in China forinformation about western countries.This research is to analyze the translation strategies and skills of trans-editing Ao-menHsin-wen-chih from the perspective of translator’s subjectivity and intersubjectivity,probing into the political, historical and cultural factors behind them as well as the influenceand restrictions exerted on translation.Ao-men Hsin-wen-chih played a positive role in promoting the cultural exchangesbetween China and western countries. Translated newspapers had opened a window forprogressive intellectuals in China to know about the world and the translation strategies andskills are still instructive today. Evidence for researches into the introduction of westernlearning into China in the19thcentury is also provided.
