In2007,the State Council Academic Degree Committee approved the setup of Masterof Translation and Interpreting, abbreviated as MTI. Compared with traditional MAeducation, MTI attaches great attention to practice abilities. Moreover, its students arerequired to write their degree dissertations closely related to translation/interpreting practice. However, since MTI has a short history and possesses unique dissertation models, itsstudents do lack precedents to refer to and encounter various challenges and obstaclesduring the writing process.By asking86MTI interpreting students, from ten universities in China includingGDUFS, BISU, HNU, HNNU, to fill in the questionnaire, the author got a basicunderstanding of the status quo of their dissertation writing, while the following personalinterview has further enhanced her comprehension of schools’ arrangement and students’writing puzzles. This report is divided into4chapters. In the first chapter, the author will review therelated research findings on MTI degree theses and give a general introduction of currentdissertation models and the corresponding requirements. The objective and significance ofthis survey will also be introduced in this chapter. In the second one, the writer willintroduce the methodology of this survey in details and conclude the challenges sheencountered and the relative solutions. In next chapter, the writer will make a descriptionand analysis on the data collected from questionnaires. With the help of some interviewtranscripts, further discussion will be held on the school’s schedule, academic guidance, students’ interpreting practice, topic and model changing, etc. At last, the major findings andlimitations of this survey will be explained. The author will make advice for MTIinterpreting dissertations writing, taking the information collected from questionnaire andinterview into consideration. Hope these suggestions produce positive effect on future MTI education, especially the dissertation writing part, and benefit the MTI interpreting students.
