Interpreting is a language activity in which interpreters constantly make choicesin language use. Different interpreters have different choices, but the choices are notalways proper. Interpreters may come across different obstacles in language choosing, and this may affect the quality of interpreting. This paper, with the framework ofAdaptation Theory proposed by Jef Verschueren, discusses the reasons whyinterpreters make inappropriate choices and then solutions are proposed to deal withthe obstacles. This paper first gives a brief review about studies on Adaptation Theory, andthen the author explains different language choices interpreters-to-be make because ofthe context, language structures, dynamic process and salience of consciousness basedon Adaptation Theory. The author also conducts an experiment to analyze the abovephenomenon and explore the reasons why obstacles come in the way of interpreting. The material of the experiment is the speech made by Premier Li Keqiang, and12subjects are asked to do the consecutive interpreting of the speech. Then transcriptionwork of interpretation of subjects is conducted, later analyses on the causes ofobstacles are made from four angles based on Adaptation Theory and finally possiblesolutions are proposed accordingly. The author probes into the problems that subjectsencounter and gives more examples to illustrate the possible solutions.
