On Note-taking For Consecutive Interpreting Beginners: Obstacles And Solutions

The instantaneity of interpreting and the insufficiency of research methods leadto the tardiness on interpreting research. As an imperative skill in the process ofinterpreting, note-taking should be paid high attention. There are many studies onnote-taking, but most of them are about methods. However, English and Chinese havetheir own characteristics, in the process of interpretation, all these characters influencethe methods and quality of notes. Therefore, it will definitely help the training ofinterpreters if difficulties of note-taking are analyzed deeply. It will also help usimprove the quality of interpretation.On the basis of a questionnaire of60senior English majored students who havemastered the basic tactics of note-taking, this thesis aims to analyze the difficulties ofnote-taking and give advice.The result shows that the problems of note-taking are caused by poor listeningability, insufficient proficiency of taking notes and weakness in capturing key points.Therefore, listening should be the priority for interpreters, while memory trainingshould be secondary to it. What’s more, the abilities of understanding symbols andstructures should be strengthened while improving the application of note-relatedsymbols and the competence of dividing sense groups.
