Governent Work Report plays an important role in introducing China’s political,economic, diplomatic and military policies to foreign countries. Its English version hasbeen a useful tool through which foreigners can comprehensively know China. In fact,many translation scholars have made efforts on the translation of Government WorkReport. Guided by different translation theories, including skopos theory, functionalequivalence, etc., they have made some achivements that are helpful for the followingresearch. However, in this field, few translators have systematically studied thetranslation of culture-loaded expressions in Government Work Report.This thesis takes10years’ Government Work Reports (from2003to2012) as itscorpus and makes use of relevance theory to study the translation of culture-loadedexpressions in Government Work Report. The aim of this thesis is to find thetranslation methods that are applicable to the the translation of culture-loadedexpressions in Government Work Report.The study reveals that the culture-loaded expressions in Government WorkReport mainly consist of ecological, social and linguistic culture–loaded expressions.As for different kinds of culture-loaded expressions, with the guidance of relevancetheory, the translators can make use of the following translation methods, such asliteral translation, literal translation plus annotation, amplification and free translation.And the relevance theory can provide theoretical support for these translation methods.Based on the analysis above, this thesis finds that relevance theory is powerful inaccounting for these translation methods, which are able to provide methodologicalguidance for further research on the translation of culture-loaded expressions inGovernment Work Report.
