| In recent years, with the rapid development of modern technology and theincreasing frequency of cross-cultural communication, western audiovisual products,especially their humorous, relaxing, fashionable and gorgeous plots, have attractedmore and more Chinese viewers. Appreciating western audiovisual products caneasily help people broaden their horizons, learn alien cultures, and most importantly,promote the communication and understanding of different cultures among nations.As an important media, subtitle translation came into being just at the right moment.Subtitle translation is a special genre of translation, which has aroused scholars’ greatinterest and heated discussion and a lot of researches were launched under the settingof more and more cultural communication in globalization. However, until now, therehas been no comprehensive and authoritative theory to guide subtitle translation. Thus,great limitations exist on the studies of subtitle translation. Now, abundant translatedsubtitles people can easily get access to are all done out of translators’ pure interestand experience, and some researches carried out are just confined to certain factors ofsubtitle translation.Under the theoretical framework of Verschueren’s adaptation theory, this thesisintends to analyze and study the subtitle translation in the British film Becoming Jane,and confirms that adaptation theory has great power in guiding and explaining subtitletranslation. During the process of analysis, the author points out the translationstrategies that subtitle translators adopted, and tries to provide her own strategies andcertain revised translations. Through the summary and analysis of those strategies,this paper attempts to provide some helpful insights and guidelines for subtitletranslators in specific translation activities. |
