| With the increasingly frequent and in-depth exchanges between China and other countries,film and television works,as one of the most popular entertainment,have become a mainstream way of cultural communication between China and the West.In recent years,the pace of China’s “going out” is getting faster,and the export of Chinese film and television works has become an important way for the foreign audience to know China.Although more and more Chinese TV dramas are exported to other countries every year,the overall export situation of Chinese TV dramas is still not optimistic compared with the European and American ones.The low quality of English subtitles of domestic shows is one of the most important factors affecting our shows to go global.At present,the creation and export of domestic film and television are flourishing,and all kinds of works are blossoming.This study chooses the time series Brave Journey to Northeast as the research example.Besides,27 to 29 episodes of Brave Journey to Northeast is for the first time translated into English by the author.Brave Journey to Northeast is based on real historical events,telling the story of thousands of Shandong people who risked their lives and went to Northeast China to make a living from 1860 to the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War during the Republic of China.The TV work is set in the Kanto region in the last century,so the language of the text has strong regional and contemporary characteristics,with simple language,loose sentences,and many short sentences being major features of the lines.The translation of culturally loaded words,including the dialect,jargon,and the gangster’s slang,is a difficult task for the translator.Subtitles translation is a process in which people make continuous choices in different contexts to satisfy the needs of communication.This opinion offers the possibility of analyzing subtitles translation in light of the Adaptation Theory.The study takes “Adaptation Theory” as the guiding theory,Brave Journey to Northeast as the translation practice text,and case analysis method as the research methodology,so as to realize the effective guidance of this theory to the whole translation process.The thesis aims to investigate the subtitle translation of Brave Journey to Northeast from four angles,namely,contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability,and salience of adaptability.In the process of analysis,the author discusses the guiding role of Adaptation Theory in the subtitle translation of Brave Journey to Northeast,and proposes how translators can apply the translation strategies of literal translation,free translation,conversion,omission,foreignization,domestication,addition,substitution,generalization,and paraphrasing to the subtitle translation of time series under the framework of Adaptation Theory with a lot of examples.At the end of the thesis,the author also includes a list of special terms in episodes 27 to 29 of Brave Journey to Northeast for the reference of other researchers.Last but not least,since the texts selected for translation are only episodes 27-29 of the series,the number of cases is limited and the study has limitations. |
