Had began in the Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties and developed in theSui and Tang and Five dynasties, the Chinese flower-and-bird paintings in collaboratestyle formed the first peak in the Northern and Southern song dynasties. As a specialstyle of the Chinese flower-and-bird realistic paintings, the flower-and-bird sketchpaintings began to appear in large quantities in the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.However, there still was not an agreed definition for the Chinese flower-and-birdpaintings in collaborate style of the Song dynasty in the academic circle. The opinionabout it varies academician to academician. Therefore, by making a summary for thecharacteristics of the sketch paintings in the field of Buddhism and medical science,this paper explored it’s inside spirit to clarify the connotation of the flower-and-birdsketch paintings in the Song Dynasty. There must existed many complex socialhistorical factors for the appearance of a special painting style in large quantities. Theobjective laws of painting development which could not be an ignored factor made theflower-and-bird sketch paintings become prosperous in the Song dynasty. Theprosperity of the Chinese flower-and-bird paintings in the Song dynasty providedsubject and technical preparation for the rise of the flower-and-bird sketch paintings.Based on the reality of its being prosperous in the Song dyna sty, this paper studied thereasons to be prosperous from three aspects of fan painting’s evolution, specialfunction by rulers and artistic civilization. Having a new style or not is a key factorthat can reflect the value of an artistic work. But the bes t artistic charm of an artisticwork always comes from the cultural implication and thoughts and feelings of thework itself. The prosperity of the flower-and-bird sketch paintings in the Songdynasty explained that their cultural implication and thoughts and feelings werefavored. The artistic charm created by the flower-and-bird sketch paintings is able toget a continued and enduring development because of their special cultural factors.This paper began by the composition of the flower-and-bird sketch paintings in theSong dynasty and explored the main culture that infected the social life in the Songdynasty from the perspective of the cultural history, especially in the period of theappearance in large quantities of the flower-and-bird sketch paintings. Combining with the work itself, this paper also discussed the cultural implication and artisticconception that be contained and created in the flower-and-bird sketch paintings inthe Song dynasty from the two philosophy level of “seeing through ultimate reasonsfrom details” and “interaction between the abstract and the concrete”.
