Prof. Zhou Xiaoyan, the famous coloratura soprano singer and vocal educatorboth in China and even all over the world, is one of the important pioneers of ChineseSchool of Vocality. During nearly sixty years of her life of vocality teaching career,Zhou has accumulated a wealth of vocal teaching experience, created a highlypersonalized vocal teaching system of thought, and cultured numerousworld-renowned singers, such as Zhang Jianyi, Wei Song, Liao Changyong, Wanshanhong, and so on.The formation of Zhou’s teaching ideas system has experienced three stages:exploring and accumulating, reflecting and summarizing, maturing and glorifying. Inher vocality teaching, Zhou has comprehensively applied the view of practice, theoverall concept, emotional outlook, individualized concept, and the view of teachersand students, and meanwhile, she expands the connotation of teaching thinking,adheres to the rules of the true, the good and the beautiful, combining the singingskills and accomplishment. Not only that, Zhou has utilized the highly personalizedteaching method in voice training and affective teaching. For example, the recitationmethod, the vowel joint method, and contrast of right and wrong method used in voicetraining have effectively solved the problems of enunciation, breath, and vowelpronunciation. And the emotional teaching uses the screen rendering method,situational inducement, and keynote grasping to solve a series of problems inemotional expression.Prof. Zhou Xiaoyan’s vocal teaching ideas are broad and profound. Researchingand summarizing her thoughts can provide a theoretical guidance for our country’svocal teaching. And this operable practice and exploration is significant andtheoretically valuable for the contemporary vocal teaching enterprise in our country.
