The Study On Literature Translation From Perspective Of Levefere’s Poetics In Manipulation

Poetics, originated from the poetics written by Aristotle, is a very vital conceptin translation theory. The representative of Manipulation School--Andere Lefevereintroduced the poetics to translation study and held that a translator will be inevitablymanipulated by dominant poetics of his or her time. He gave an explicit definition ofpoetics in his masterpiece Translating, Rewriting and Manipulation of Literary Fame:A poetics can be said to consist of two components: one is an inventory of literarydevices, genres, motifs, prototypical characters and situation, and symbols, the otherconcept what the role of literature is, or should be, in the social system as a whole.The following scholars studied it from the micro level and macro level.The Zhao Yuanren s translation of Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a canonin translation fields. When it comes to the studying of the Zhao s version, almost allthe researches remain on linguistic circle or on the level of translation criticismdomestically, or even propose some principles of children s literature translationthrough studying it. Although there are some scholars who have firstly put thestudying in the cultural or historical background, pointing out that Zhao s translationwas manipulated by the ideology of his time, they neglect the importance of thepoetics. This paper will discuss the manipulation of the dominant poetics on Zhao sversion of Alices Adventures in Wonderland from the perspective of manipulationtheory.The paper tries to makes an elaboration on Lefevere s poetics of translation fromthe perspective of manipulation, and studies Zhao s version on the micro-level andmacro-level from the perspective of Lefevere s poetics of translation. On the macrolevel, the writer discusses how the cultural and historical background and how thepoetics of reader at that time manipulate the cultural translation; on the micro level,the writer analyses the influence of poetics of translation from the micro perspectivesuch as language, literary device, the genre. What s more, the significance of ZhaoYuanren s Translation of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in enhancing the construction of poetics is referred in this chapter. So through the studying of theAlice s Adventure in Wonderland of Zhao s version, the paper finds that the wholeprocess of translation is inevitably influenced by the dominant poetics and translationis not always margined in a literary system as it can play a very vital role inpeotological construction.
