Effect Of Cross-language On False Memory Among Proficient Uygur-chinese Bilinguals

The studies of whether false memory can cross language boundaries are helpful tounderstand the mechanisms of false memory and the features of conceptualrepresentation in the first and second language of bilinguals. In the past, mush of theseresearches had involved memory for linguistic stimuli with DRM paradigm, but few ofthese studies had involved bilingual participants for whom language was varied betweenstudy and test.In this study, we adopt DRM paradigm with the study lists presented throughauditory and visual under difference processing concerns to investigate false memoryacross languages of proficient Uygur-Chinese bilinguals. So two researches and fourexperiments are conducted. In the first research, with the emphasis on verbatimprocessing condition, which test item is to be recognized learned only when it is the sameword in the learning stage, we want to know whether false memories of Uygur andChinese of proficient Uygur-Chinese bilinguals can cross language boundaries and wantto know whether false memories of the two kinds of languages are difference when wepresent the study lists auditory and visually. In the second research, with the emphasis ongist processing condition, which test item can be recognized learned as long as itsmeaning is the same with a certain item in the learning stage, we also want to knowwhether false memories of Uygur and Chinese of proficient Uygur-Chinese bilingualscan cross language boundaries and want to know whether false memories of the twokinds of languages are difference when we present the study lists auditory and visually. A2(language at study and test: same language; different language)by3(word types at test:studied words, critical lures and unrelated words)repeated factorial design is used in fourexperiments. The dependent variables are the hit rates of the studied words, the falserecognition rates of the critical lures and unrelated words.By statistical analysis, the results of two research and four experiments indicate that:(1) In the emphasis on verbatim processing condition, which test item is to berecognized learned only when it is the same word in the learning stage, false memories ofUygur can cross language boundaries and false recognition of critical lures of Uygur arehigher in same language than different language, when the study lists are presented byvisually and auditory. False memories of Chinese can cross language boundaries andfalse recognition of critical lures of Chinese are higher in same language than differentlanguage, when the study lists are presented by visually, not auditory. (2) In the emphasis on gist processing condition, which test item can be recognizedlearned as long as its meaning is the same with a certain item in the learning stage,falsememories of Uygur and Chinese can cross language boundaries, when the study lists arepresented by visually and auditory. The false recognition of critical lures of Uygur ishigher in same language than different language, but the difference of false recognitionof critical lures of Chinese is no significant between same language and differentlanguage.(3) In the emphasis on verbatim processing condition, which test item is to berecognized learned only when it is the same word in the learning stage, the difference offalse recognition of critical lures of Uygur and Chinese between visual study andauditory study is not significant. However, in the emphasis on gist processing condition,which test item can be recognized learned as long as its meaning is the same with acertain item in the learning stage, visual study led to significantly less false recognitionof critical lures of Uygur and Chinese than auditory study.(4) When the language is different between study and test, false recognitions ofcritical lures of Uygur and Chinese are less in the emphasis on verbatim processingcondition than in the emphasis on gist processing condition.
