A Comparative Study On Two English Versions Of Zui Weng Ting Ji From The Perspective Of Three Beauties Principle

As Chinese classical prose, Zui Weng Ting Ji is widely accepted generation bygeneration. A lot of scholars have done researches on the translation of Chineseversion of Zui Weng Ting Ji. This thesis tries to make a comparative study on twoversions of the English versions. They are Giles’ version and the couple of YangXianyi&Gladys Yang’s version.This thesis is theoretically based on Xu Yuanchong’s “Three Beauties” Principle,aiming at further exploring on one of Chinese classical literatures by the comparativestudy of the two translation versions. Xu Yuanchong is a Chinese famous translator,who is well-known for his “Three Beauties” Principle.“Three Beauties” Principle wasonce regarded as the standard of the translation in Chinese classical poetry. As for itsbeautiful rhyme and rhythm, Zui Weng Ting Ji is like a colorful picture feasting toyour eyes and a sound song feasting to your ears. Therefore, this thesis tries to make atentative research on the comparative analysis of the translation of classical prose ZuiWeng Ting Ji under a new perspective of “Three Beauties” Principle.The thesis is to make a systematically comparative analysis on the two translationversions in the three aspects of Xu’s “Three Beauties”, beauty in sense, sound andform. Firstly, it reminds of the creation of background of Zui Weng Ting Ji. It is onthis basis that the three beauties in the original text are reproduced in the translationversions, which is shown mainly by the adoption of the comparison methods and caseanalysis methods. Thus we can try to get a conclusion that the beauties in Chineseclassical prose can also be reproduced under the perspective of “Three Beauties”Principle.“Three Beauties” Principle, though as the criteria of the translation ofpoetry, can also be a new criteria of the translation of prose. It designs to apply themethod of poetry translation into the analyzing of prose, which, in some degrees, willadd some enlightenments for the widespread learners and scholars in the future.
