As a small class of interrogative sentences, specialinterrogative sentence plays an irreplaceable role in languagecommunication. Taking The Water Margin and Four Generations UnderOne Roof as the corpus, the present thesis analyzes and contrastsspecial interrogative sentences from syntactic, semantic andpragmatic perspectives, so as to explore their characteristics inthe periods of early modern Chinese and modern Chinese, and furtherprobe into their rules and trends of diachronic development.This thesis makes a thorough statistics of specialinterrogative sentences in the two works, and then makes an analysisand contrast of interrogative pronouns, sentence patterns and modalparticles in special interrogative sentences through the adoptionof the following research methods—diachronic and synchronic,description and explanation, quantitative statistics and dataanalysis.The thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter is introduction. This chapter mainly explainsthe reasons for choosing the topic, research review, corpusselection, research theory, research objectives, research methods,and research characteristics.The second chapter concerns the analysis of the interrogativepronouns. It mainly focuses on the detailed and specific analysisof the classification and distribution of the special interrogativesentences in the two works.The third chapter presents the contrastive analysis of the interrogative pronouns, sentence patterns and modal artcles. As thekey chapter of the thesis, it mainly makes a contrastive analysisof the interrogative pronouns, sentence patterns and modal artclesin the special interrogative sentences. Interrogative pronounsare mainly compared from the aspects of category, distribution,syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic; sentence patterns are fromellipsis and passive phenomenon; modal particles are mainly fromcategories.The last chapter serves as the conclusion part. The main contentincludes the induction and summary of the whole thesis, and thedevelopment rules and trends of the special interrogative sentencesfrom early modern period to the modern period.
