This translation report is based on the study of the excerpt of Quicksand and thecorresponding English-Chinese translation practice. Quicksand was written by theAfro-American female writer, Nella Larsen. With an autobiographical feature, thisnovel discusses the twisted and deformed image imposed on the American Africanfemales by the mainstream values of the white.In this translation project, the author selects5chapters from the original novel(chapter3-chapter7), which introduces the heroine’s journey from Naxos to Chicago,and then to New York in the pursuit of belongingness. With a lot of vividdescriptions of psychological activity and natural scenery, the literary language ofthis part is rather creative and complex.The translation report is classified into four parts including the source textanalysis, translation process, translation problems and solving process, andsuggestions on the translation of Afro-American female novel. To solve thedifficulties and problems of words, sentences, and figures of speech encountered inthe translation process, various translation strategies have been adopted. The authorhopes this translation report can offer some references for the understanding andtranslation of Afro-American female novel.
