In recent years, mobile learning has been possible in college learning with the rapiddevelopment of mobile technology. Mobile learning also provides an opportunity tocollege English learning. Therefore, it has become one of the most significant issuesnowadays for college English teachers to combine the mobile learning and the collegeEnglish teaching thus to construct better learning surroundings for students and toimprove their English proficiency.Mobile learning allows people to obtain information and acquire knowledgethrough mobile internet and mobile communication devices. Therefore, anappropriate mobile learning device is vital for conducting mobile learning in college.According to the previous research and the survey conducted in Jiangxi Science andTechnology Normal University, the smartphone has been used as the best mobilelearning device due to the fact that it is the most popular device with powerfulfunctions and reasonable price. Based on that, the subject, smartphone-aided collegeEnglish mobile learning model, has been proposed in order to help students learn atany time and any place, and to improve their English proficiency and independentlearning ability, with the assistance of smartphone. The thesis is divided into five chapters to raise the subject, construct thesmartphone-aided college English mobile learning model, and carry out the empiricalstudy to test the research hypothesis: the smartphone-aided college English mobilelearning model is more effective in raising students’ interest in learning English andimproving their English proficiency. The paper first analyzes the background of mobile learning and introduces the maincontents and the significance of this research in chapter one.Chapter Two provides a theoretical study. It analyzes the theoretical basis of mobilelearning from the perspective of constructivism learning, blended learning, informallearning and activity learning and their implications for college English.Chapter three focuses on mobile learning and college English. It first makes clearthe definition of the mobile learning being studied which based on the present situation in Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University; then it discusses thelearning forms of smartphone-aided learning, and analyzes the characteristics ofsmartphone-aided learning and its positive effects on college English learning; thelast part of chapter three deals with a questionnaire survey investigating the feasibilityto carry out the smartphone-aided college English mobile learning in Jiangxi Scienceand Technology Normal University. From the survey it can be concluded that moststudents are interested in mobile learning, and smartphone is the most popular devicewith powerful functions and reasonable price which lays a solid foundation to carryout a smartphone-aided mobile learning model.Chapter four is about the construction of the smartphone-aided college Englishmobile learning model based on the theoretical study and the previous investigationand analysis. It first discusses the general role the model plays in college Englishlearning, and then elaborates on the implementation of the model.Chapter five deals with the empirical study which was carried out for one semesterin the experiment class. A large amount of data, collected from questionnaire survey,face-to-face interview and organized examinations, was mainly analyzed with SPSS,which helped to test the research hypothesis.Chapter six sums up the research, gives a review of the contributions and analyzesthe existing deficiency of this study and provides a prospect for future research.Practice has proved that the smartphone-aided college English mobile learningmodel constructed according to the current condition is more effective in raisingstudents’ interest in learning English and improving their English proficiencycompared with traditional college English teaching and learning style.
