Nowadays, as the globalization widens and deepens, many Chinese cities have Englishofficial websites along with the Chinese counterparts, aiming to better publicize the cities andattract more visitors and investors both from home and abroad. However, the contents of theEnglish websites are commonly translated from the Chinese counterparts and many of them are ofunsatisfactory quality. To optimize the role of English official websites, the Chinese-English(C-E)translation of their contents should be improved under the guidance of relevant studies on thetranslation of publicity materials (TPM).City overviews on official websites of municipal governments, as a kind of publicitymaterials, provide the general information about cities, portraying basic images of cities to theaudience. Therefore, the C-E translation of city overviews should also follow the standards andguidance of TPM to achieve publicity effects and ends. This thesis is a study of the C-E translationof city overviews in the light of TPM, based on the concrete analysis and the trial translation ofcity overviews on11municipal official websites of Jiangxi Province, the People’s Republic ofChina. The thesis first reviews the current studies on TPM, then focuses on the analysis of theselected cases (both the Chinese and English texts of city overviews), and finally makessuggestions including translation strategies and skills for such translation practice.As a report of translation practice, this thesis aims to summarize the translation strategiesand skills applied in the practice and thus provide suggestions for, at least, the author in futuretranslation study and practice.
