The huns is a nation rising early in the ancient history of China. From the warringstates period to the period of Wei Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties they livemainly in Mongolian plateau. In the last years of the warring states period the huns underthe leadership of Touman Shan-yu began to doing startling well. During reign of the Modu,who is the son of Touman Shan-yu, huns’ political system is well improved and militarypower becomes the strongest. So they unify north tribes, which plays a great role in theshape of the unified multi-ethnic country.This thesis analyzes the reason why the huns become powerful and prosperous in thereign of Modu from subjective and objective aspects, and also analyzes the pomp of “thegreat country of Baiman”. From a macroscopic view, the thesis shows the political,military,and social economical development of Modu period to better interpreter theimportance of this period.The thesis is made up of four parts:The first part gives an summary of the huns in the3rdcentry BC. Fist of all, threepresentative opinions of the huns’origin is studied. Opinion one: huns are the descendantsof Huanxia nation. Opinion two: huns are descendants of Shan-rong, Xianyun, Hunzhouand Di as well as Rong races and so on. Opinion three: the huns is a new nationalityshaped by northern tribes after long time of nation fusion in warring period. By means ofcomparison and analysis the thesis prefers the third opinion.The second part discusses the huns’ expansion during the reign of Modu. Firstly,Modu is analyzed. He has once been a hostage in Yuezhi and then he has killed his fatherto take the throne. Secondly, the expansion routes of huns is displayed. To make the hunsstronger, Modu takes a series of policy, and finally unites the northern parts. Lastly, therelationship of Han dynasty and the huns is mainly discussed, especially during the reignof Emperor Gaozu, Queen Lv and Emperor Wen. In this period, one outstanding point isthat the huns takes a strong position in the relationship of Han and Huns. The huns carry acarrot-and-stick policy and show their strong military power. The thesis also exhibits the great significance of the unity of northern region.The third part talks about the establishment of the huns social system. It respectivelydiscusses the establishment of huns’ political system and the development of socialeconomy in the reign of Modu. The development is reflected in the establishment of a setof relative complete political system, the growth of huns’ population, the circulation of thelanguage of huns and the development of animal husbandry and agriculture, business andso on.The forth part summarize the influence that huns becomes “the Great country ofBaiman” during the reign of Modu and the potential crisis. Through in the reign of Moduthe huns is “the Great country of Baiman”, the basic rule of the unit still holds its tribenature. The regime of Modu is more of a military and political union which is temporaryand lack of stability. Once the regime lost its powerful helmsman the whole regime willcollapse.
