On Translating Cultural-loaded Expressions In Xiao Erhei’s Marriage From The Perspective Of Bassnett’s Cultural View On Translation

Taking country life as its theme, Chinese local colorism includesabundant cultural-loaded expressions, which are closely linked with Chinesehistory, folk culture, and social background. They present a distinctive localflavor which poses a problem in successfully translating the local color inChinese-English translation. Though there have been a number of translationstudies on Chinese literature, fewer have been done on Chinese local colorism,especially on the Potato School. Based on Susan Bassnett’s cultural view ontranslation and the previous studies, the thesis will analyze the cultural-loadedexpressions in the two English translations of Xiao Erhei’s Marriage,attempting to contrast the translation strategies of cultural-loaded expressionsand promote the English translation studies of Xiao Erhei’s Marriage. It findsthat The Marriage of Young Blacky tends to tackle the cultural-loadedexpressions mainly by domestication, which makes it readable and fluent; LittleErhei’s Marriage tends to tackle them mainly by foreignization, which makes itwordy and rigid. Against the analysis, it sums up four translation methods intranslating the diverse cultural-loaded expressions in Chinese local colorism:Literal translation, transcription, substitution, and generalization.
