The present study aims to explore the problems resulting from the usage andimproper C-E translation of vague language in business emails and tries to come upwith proper translation principles and methods from the perspectives of Grice’scooperative principle and Leech’s politeness principle. Studies of “languagevagueness”(sometimes called “linguistic vagueness” in previous research) regardvagueness as a general phenomenon in language. Though business language isrequired to be formal and accurate, the vague language is inevitable and remarkablyimportant in email communication. This research starts with a summary of previousfindings and their limitations. Next, the main types of problems caused by C-Etranslation of vague language in business emails are classified and the causes of theseproblems are examined based on a case-by-case analysis. Then some proposedtranslation principles and methods to solve these problems are offered. At the sametime, the application of these proposed methods will be illustrated to improve thequality of C-E translation of vagueness in business emails.
