“Gone with the Wind”, American female writer Margaret Mitchell’s greatest work,is full of romances and mirrors the Civil War of America. It is considered to be themost classical love story when published in1936. This great work caused hugesensation after it was published. It has been translated into more than40languages allover the world. In1940s, the translated version became proverbial in China and alsocaused different reflections in Chinese literature field. Different versions have showndifferent understandings and appreciation from the translators.This thesis compares Fu Donghua and Chen Liangting’s versions. Both of thetwo versions make great success in translation fields, but they show different styles indifferent times. There are many researches done on these two versions, but only a fewcan be rated as in-depth and systematic studies, and less is from the perspective oftranslational aesthetics. In view of this fact, this thesis attempts to make a systematicstudy of the novel from the perspective of translational aesthetics based on the analysisof two Chinese versions respectively by Fu Donghua and Chen Liangting. This thesiscompared different backgrounds behind the two versions and analyzed theword-choosing, sentence-making and paragraph-composing from the aspects oftranslational aesthetics.The study showed that cultural factors in translation activities play a veryimportant role. So in literary translation, we can not neglect cultural factors and simplyjudge the translated versions by lingual equivalence.
