The Tang Poetry Theory Of Xu Xueyi

As an important theorists of poetry in the late Ming Dynasty,Xu Xueyi’s famouspoem-writing “Shi yuan bian ti” gave the mainly exposition of Tang poems aroundtwo dimensions—“Roots” and “Distinctions”,which had made a profound impact onthe later poetry research and poetics system construction.The poetics theory of Xu Xueyi has a negligible relationship with late MingDynasty’s epoch culture and poetic development, especially late Ming was in animportant transition of Chinese society. During that time,the politic, history,economy, culture were changed rapidly,and the multi—thoughts were formed in theculture field. So Xu Xueyi was influenced by this, and gradually formed his owntherorists of poetry. In the poetry field, there were two main poetry lines in late Ming—“style” and “emotional” poetry. Xu Xueyi compromised them and reconcile the“Old Master” and “Master Mind”,then he opened up a new realm of poetry.The book “Shi yuan bian ti” has36volumes, of which about two-thirds proportionare related to Tang poetry, so we can speculate Xu Xueyi’s research was centered onTang poetry. Xu Xueyi’s research had already made the Tang poetry study into a newlevel. Firstly, he paid more attention to the physical characteristics of Tang poetry,then he detailed analysis the Tang poetry’s characteristics with the "constitution first"view and the Tang poetry’s intonation, implication and gas grid. Secondly, with thedeveloped view “review its origins, develop its changes”, Xu Xueyi thoroughlydiscovered the asanas origins and four Tang poetry’s development law, so he putforward many new insights. Thirdly, the tone of poet Yan Yu runs through in Shiyuan bian ti. On one hand, Xu Xueyi follow Yan Yu’s “identifying system” to measmeasure the Tang poetry; on the other hand,according to Yan Yu’s theoryof“interest”、“becomes aware” and so on,Xu Xueyi proposed the view of “interests”、“into saint”、“natural” and so on,these theories are inherited from YanYu, and some were surpassed him.Xu Xueyi’s theorists of Tang poetry are the real cornerstone of the entire poeticsystem, his compromised thoughts and subject insights all have an important impacton the future poetics, and have become an indispensable part of poetry comments.Inshort, the Tang theory which Xu Xueyi discovered have promoted the theorists of theTang poetry, and have an important sense of literary history.
