A Study Of The Portrayal Of Women In Long Xueyi’s Plays

Long Xueyi(1941-2015)was one of the playwrights with an important position in Sichuan opera and the whole Chinese theatre since the reform and opening up.In his more than fifty years of creative career,his plays spanned many genres such as Sichuan opera,Huangmei opera,Han opera and Kunqu opera,leaving behind for the theatre world such as Sichuan opera Jinzi,Mingfeng,Huangmei opera Thunderstorm,Han opera Jinlian,etc.Long Xueyi has won many domestic awards,such as the Drama Award of the Chinese Caoyu Drama Award,the Wenhua Drama Award and so on.His valuable creative experience and artistic achievements have important reference and inspiration for the creation,inheritance and development of Chinese contemporary drama.Long Xueyi’s plays creation is mostly based on the adaptation and artistic re-creation of classic and famous dramas,with women as the protagonist,presenting us with a series of female characters with distinctive personality and unique aesthetic implications,leaving a thick and colorful mark in the gallery of opera literature characters.This paper takes his most representative opera literature works such as Jinzi,Thunderstorm,White Dew as Frost,Mingfeng,Jinlian,Pan Jinlian,Rashomon,The Death of Diaochan and Dream Butterfly as the object of analysis,deeply analyzes the artistic skills and creative methods of constructing female images in the plays,and deeply analyzes the aesthetic significance and female outlook contained in female images.The thesis is divided into four chapters.The first chapter combs the origin and evolution of female images in Long Xueyi’s plays;The second chapter explores the basic characteristics of the three types of female images,the generation of the characters and the ideological significance of the three types of female images,based on the detailed and in-depth analysis of the three types of female images,namely,the negative female images,the tragic female images and the "new female" images;The third chapter summarizes and sums up the methods,techniques and artistic concepts of Long Xueyi’s use of modern thinking to construct female images at the levels of narrative structure and drama situation;The fourth chapter analyzes the rational concept of the tragic creation reflected by the female image,as well as the author’s humanistic thought and ultimate concern for women from the male perspective.From the aesthetic concept,creative attitude and value pursuit of Long Xueyi,we call for a new artistic outlook of opera literature and the return of the people-centered drama spirit.
