Hand-held camera or hand-held shooting is a filmmaking technique in which a camera is held in the operator’s hands or the operator’s shoulder, as opposed to being mounted on a tripod or other base. Hand-held camera is a cinematographic technique where stable-image techniques are purposely dispensed with.Hand-held cameras are used because they allow greater freedom of motion during filming. The camera is held in the hand, or given the appearance of being hand-held, giving a film a documentary style. It suggests unprepared, unrehearsed filming of reality, and can provide a sense of dynamics, immersion, instability or nervousness. Desire for intense subjectivity is a commonplace of filming with hand-held.The use of hand-held cameras is also a part of the repertoire of standard cinematic methodology. The technique first became commonplace in the1960s with the advent of lighter cameras and synchronised sound. This was a revolutionary moment in film history in both documentary and feature films. The Dogme95movement was partly based on the technique. Today hand-held is employed everywhere. It gains its worldwide popularity from big Hollywood features to small independent art house films. In this thesis, the historic development and aesthetic analysis of handheld camera are discussed in depth and in two chapters. In Chapter1, it deals with how technology, especially the improvements of light-weight cameras interacts with the development of Handheld Camera Aesthetics. In Chapter2, it discusses how handheld works effectively, coherently, and creatively as a cinematic technique, partly in a film, or integrality as a structural element.
