Zhang Huaiguan is an important calligrapher and calligraphy theorist in ancient China. His calligraphy theory works are rich in content, His calligraphy theory works mainly involve calligraphy essentialism, calligraphy creation, calligraphy aesthetic theory, history of calligraphy, and many other aspects. But this paper pay attention to the study of aesthetic theory. It includes four parts:the introduction, calligraphy aesthetic pursuit, calligraphy aesthetic ways, the frame of "Shen Miao Neng" for the critical theory of ancient Chinese calligraphy.The introduction mainly discussed the basic situation of Zhang Huai guan and his calligraphy theory works, summarizes the research status about Zhang Huaiguan’s calligraphy aesthetic thought, and generalizes the research idea of the paper.The main body expounds his calligraphy aesthetic thoughts from the following three aspects:First, Zhang Huaiguan’s calligraphy aesthetic idea. Zhang Huaiguan’s calligraphy aesthetic idea mainly embodies the pursuit for calligraphy "spirits". Calligraphy "spirits" are mainly contains "being vivid" and "trace being affectionate" two aspects."Being vivid" embodies in "flying growth, being grand and magnificent"."Trace being affectionate " embodies in " Elicits emotions " and " Imposing manner ". Being vivid" and "trace being affectionate" are two aspects of Zhang Huanguan’s calligraphy "spirits". So "being grand and magnificent" and " Imposing manner " intensively reflect the Zhang Huaiguan’s calligraphy aesthetic pursuit.Second, Zhang Huaiguan’s calligraphy aesthetic ways. Zhang Huaiguan criticizes two incorrect calligraphy aesthetic mentalities.One mentality is there is too much rational thinking, the other is to value the aural but look down upon the observed Thus, Zhang Huaiguan proposes a calligraphy aesthetic thought named "spirit bright" It indicates the calligraphy aesthetic need "being quite" to taste the beauty of calligraphy. On this basis, this paper summarizes the Zhang Huai guan’s calligraphy aesthetic ways:one is the " seeking the change, chasing the sprits," and this article explains this way from the angle of Groos’s "inner imitation". The second is "seeking and thinking ", Zhang Huai guan stressed the value of imagination in the process of calligraphy aesthetic feeling. The third is "like playing trace and seeking emotion". On the one hand, it emphasizes on the idea that different calligraphy stipple can afford different aesthetic feeling. On the other hand, it stresses the great importance of "knowing the author then commenting his calligraphy " in the process of calligraphy aesthetic emotion.Third, the Aesthetic connotation of "Shen Miao Neng" and the evaluation criteria. Based on the research of Zhang Huaiguan related calligraphy theory works, we summaried the doctrine of the aesthetic connotation.
