Research Of The Calligraphy Critical System Of Zhang Huaiguan

The calligraphy theory of Zhang Huaiguang enjoyed an important position in the history of Chinese calligraphy theory. He not only made an overall summary of calligraphy thought of the six dynasties, (from Han to Wei), but also carried on a comprehensive discussion to the different aspects of problems in the field of calligraphy and brought forth many new points of view. Especially in the aspect of calligraphy criticism Zhang's contributions to the criticism of calligraphy are the establishment of new critical system and the inauguration of new criticism criterion of calligraphy. He also provided a more rational reference system and constructed a basic frame of"Shen﹑Miao﹑Neng"for the critical theory of ancient Chinese calligraphy. His theory took over from the past and set a new course for the future and proved to be an important turning point in the period of Tang Dynasty.This paper attempts to make an overall and systematic analysis and deep and concrete illustration of nine pieces of Zhang's calligraphy theory so as to make an Rational understanding and grasp of Zhang's critical theory.
