The increasingly frequent culture exchange between China and the west hascreated vast domestic market for the English children‘s novels, and the introductionand translation of English children‘s novels have become a hot topic. However, thesesmall-scale translation activities are mainly stimulated by the market demands.Therefore, discussions on specific translation practices are insufficient.This report talks about the translation practice of children‘s novel in English withA Boy and a Bear in a Boat as a case study. The translation task, about50,000words inlength, has been completed by the author of the thesis and the other two participantswithin45days. Through the analysis of the translation process of the task and the casestudy, the thesis discusses three main problems in the process of translating thechildren‘s novel A Boy and a Bear in a Boat. Firstly, how should we represent therhetorical devices frequently applied in the source text; secondly, how should we solvethe problems caused by the differences between Chinese and English phonetics; thirdly,how should we present the distinctive features of English children‘s novels.This report firstly introduces the background of translation task and A Boy and aBear in a Boat. Preparations and processes of translation task are also presented,followed by the discussions of theoretical guidance and significance of translation task.Case analysis and Conclusion are the last two parts. In the case analysis, under theguidance of Skopos theory, the report focuses on the problems encountered in thetranslation of A Boy and a Bear in a Boat and at the same time introduces fourtranslation methods to solve the problems, including substitution, adaptation, semanticextension and omission.The translation practice shows that, in order to ensure a successful translation ofchildren‘s novel, translators should thoroughly understand the characteristics ofprotagonists and rhetoric techniques of the source text and adopt flexible translationmethods to properly solve the problems caused by the linguistic differences betweenChinese and English. It is hoped that this report would offer some useful informationto researches on the translation of other children‘s novels, and thus make the childrenreaders better appreciate the charm of foreign children‘s literature with the promotionof exchanges between Chinese and western culture as its end.
