This paper mainly discuss the cataphoric function of demonstrative pronoun" Zhe Yang" and its related structures in modern Chinese. We try to find the hidden functions behind this phenomenon and the connections between forms and functions by describing the grammatical items which played by "Zhe Yang" and its related structures. We also attempt to find the peculiarity of this phenomenon by comparing it with other demonstrative pronouns. Using real data, we investigate how the phenomenon used in different literary forms and summarize the impacts of literary forms on the phenomenon.There are six chapters in this paper. Sections are as follows:The first chapter:the introduction. This chapter briefly introduce the research overview of cataphora, the theoretical basis, the significance, the methods and the sources of corpus of this paper.The second chapter:the cataphora of demonstrative pronoun "Zhe Yang" and its related structures. We make a detailed description of grammatical items which played by "Zhe Yang" and some related structures. Cataphora is divided into indicating point and indicated parts. There are four kinds of indicating points:single demonstrative pronoun "Zhe Yang" used in sentence, single demonstrative pronoun "Zhe Yang" used between sentences,"Zhe Yang" with NP structures and "Zhe Yang" with VP structures. Each of the kinds has internal diversity.The third chapter:the research of cataphorie function of "Zhe Yang" and its related structures. This chapter mainly discuss four functions:sentence completion, chunking, cohesion and coherence and attracting focus, which belong to grammar, cognition, text and pragmatics. We find that cohesion and attracting focus are fundamental functions. Chunking and sentence completion complementing each other in text.The fourth chapter:the compare between demonstrative pronoun "Zhe Yang" and other demonstrative pronouns in cataphora. In this chapter, we attempt to find the peculiarity of "Zhe Yang" when used in cataphora. By comparing with "Na Yang","Zhe Ge " and "Zhe Me", we get the conclusion that "Zhe Yang" is more versatile than others in cataphora and it can be used as Discourse Marker of cataphora. Besides, the indicated parts of "Zhe Yang" are closer to present time and space, with more high degree of familiarity and short Psychological distance.The fifth chapter:the relations between "Zhe Yang" and its related structures in cataphora and literary forms. In this chapter we find that cataphora of "Zhe Yang" and its related structures appears more in Spoken language than Written language. In different literary forms, cataphora appears more in poem, scientific articles and documentary literature. It appears less more in prose, novel and news. Political essays has the least occurrence rate of cataphora.The sixth chapter:the conclusion. This chapter is a summary which introduces the main contents and problems of the paper.
