More and more attention have been paid to the learners themselves in the study of second language learning. Many scholars and experts have devoted themselves to the study of individual factors of second language learners, however, they have never covered the area of psychological defense mechanism. This essay focuses on psychological defense mechanism of American college students who have come to China to study Chinese as well as their Chinese-learning anxiety and analyzes the relationship between their psychological defense mechanism and Chinese-learning anxiety. The research results are as follows:1. American college students choose psychological defense mechanism very differently. They use mature defense mechanism most of the time and then Intermediate defense mechanism and then concealing factor. Immature defense mechanism are used the least. Compared with male, female tends to use immature defense mechanism more. Compared with non-only child, only-child tends to use concealing factor more.2. Generally, American college students learning Chinese in China all suffer from Chinese learning anxiety, but not very much. Only a small number of students experience really low or high level of anxiety. Self-evaluation of Chinese level has a great impact on Chinese learning anxiety and the previous experience of studying in a new country as well as characteristics have an even greater influence on learning anxiety.On the contrary, students’ gender, age, time of learning Chinese, classroom atmosphere and care from TCSL teachers do not possess any clear influence on Chinese learning anxiety.3. Mature defense mechanism is negatively correlated with Chinese learning anxiety. Intermediate defense mechanism is also negatively correlated with Chinese learning anxiety. Immature defense mechanism and concealing factor do not possess any clear correlation with Chinese learning anxiety.To establish mature defense mechanism, college students should develop a healthy outlook on life, while parents and teachers should provide equality and democracy. Meanwhile the society should offer more chances for students. To release Chinese learning anxiety, students ought to adjust themselves physically and psychologically. On the other hand, TCSL teachers should try to inspire students’ interests by providing an interesting classroom atmosphere and adjust the curriculum in time as well as encourage students more often. |
