Free Speech Movement breaking out in the University of California Berkeley campus in the fall of1964, undoubtedly has an important role in the history of the American student movement in the1960s, the New Left movement and the Counterculture movement. As the first large student protest movement of the outbreak in American university in the1960s, Free Speech Movement opening a prelude to American even global large-scale student rebellion movement of1960s and promoting the outbreak of Western New Left Movement, was a turning point from liberalism to radicalism for American student movement of1960s, and was also the starting point of American counterculture movement in the1960s. As a representative of the Student New Left and a typical rebellious youth in the1960s, Mario Savio was an influential figure in the history of American student movement and the New Left Movement. He rose to fame because of leading the Free Speech Movement in early, becoming the first media start of the1960s Student New Left Movement, and later attended the national Anti-war movement the Women’s movement and the Environmental movement, laying his status as a1960s radical youth idol. Free Speech Movement not only provided the historical stage for Mario Savio’s rebellion, but also opened his conscious and firm rebel course, eventually making him into the famous American rebel fighter. Ultimately, because of the spiritual leadership in the Free Speech Movement, he became the symbol of Free Speech Movement in history.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the article is divided into four chapters. The introduction discusses the significance and research status of this topic. Researching the topic of Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement will be of great benefit for us to deeply understand the formation of the youth thought of rebellion^the rise of American student rebellion movement in the1960s and the trend of American society and culture after the1960s. The first chapter discusses the historical causes of Mario Savio’s rebellious ideas. It is not only the product of the American special historical and socio-cultural conditions, but also closely relates with his own early growing experiences and family environment. The second chapter systematically combs the rise and fall of Mario Savio and Free Speech Movement, emphasizing Mario Savio’s leading role which he play and his spiritual leadership in it. The third chapter describes the impact from five perspectives separately which Free Speech Movement had on Mario Savio、college student、American university、the student movement of the mid-to late-196s、American society、politics and culture in order to reveal the legacy of Free Speech Movement. The fourth chapter firstly outlines Free Speech Movement in the eyes of Mario Savio. He believes Free Speech Movement is the civil rights movement struggling for "justice" and "freedom" which expends on campus. And then the author re-evaluates the nature and historical orientation of Free Speech Movement. The author argues that it is not only a peaceful school reform movement, but also a radical "Campus Revolution". Finally, the author makes a simple analysis and evaluation for Mario Savio, and advocates young students should have some care and responsibility for society.
