After World Warâ…¡, in order to slove the problem such as housing and transportation, the U.S.Government launched the Urban Renewal Program and established the Interstate Highway System. During this period, many historical buildings and historical monuments were demolished. At the same time, the conflict and resistance were often occurred between urban renewal amd historic preservation. In 1963,Penn Station, the famous historical buildings in New York, was demolished. This event became the fuse of Historic Preservation Movement in 1960s. Subsequently, Special Committee on Historic Preservation went to Europe and studied how to establish a complete system of historic preservation,Historic Preservation Movement was begun.Under the joint effort of National Trust for Historic Preservation, Special Committee on Historic Preservation, President Johnson, a number of historians and workers, National Historic Preservation Act was signed into law on 1966, the bill's enactment is the major achievements for Historic Preservation Movement, This act established several institutions include Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and State Historic Preservation Office, the federal government would play the leading role role in Historic Preservation;created National Register of Historic Places which called The Cornerstone of Historic Preservation System, The Historic Preservation Fund and Section 106 Review to make sure the system could be in working order. The Historic Preservation System was finally established.After a the briefly introduced the Historic Preservation's History, The thesis mainly researches the background of Historic Preservation Movement in 1960s,the main achievements of Federal and Local Government,and the movement's influence in historic preservation,economic and education fields.
