Irish modern drama was a drama school consisting of Yeats, John Synge, Mrs. Augusta Gregory and other dramatists developed with the Irish Literary Renaissance at the end of19th century. In modern china, the Irish modern drama recommended and introduced by Guo Moruo, Tian Han and etc produced important influences in Chinese modern literature history. Guo Moruo and Tian Han became attached to Irish modern drama during their stay in Japan and strove to introduce it to the Chinese literary world. The interlinked literary viewpoints and tumultuous patriotism was the important reason why they had the resonance in Irish modern drama. The full-bodied symbolism, warm spiritual narration, graceful poeticized structure, and bright ego color investments connected them all tightly together. However, what was very regretful was that it lacked a lot in studying Irish modern drama and its influences on Chinese dramas and it was short of the overall understanding and attention on the intermediate function of Japanese culture as Guo Moruo and Tian Han accepted the influences of Irish modern dramas during the May Fourth Movement. In view of insufficiencies existing in the research, the paper brings the influences of Irish modern drama represented by Yeats and Singer on the dramas of Guo Moruo and Tian Han and strives to give the macroscopic and overall observation. The paper is divided into three chapters:In Chapter one, it discusses Japanese intermediary factors of the encounter between Guo Moruo and Tian Han and Irish modern drama. As the medium and bridge of Guo Moruo, Tian Han in learning western culture, the function of Japanese culture on the Chinese dramatists’acceptance of Irish modern drama. This chapter mainly studies the Japanese intermediary function of Guo Monruo and Tian Han’s acceptance of the artist spirit of Irish modern dramas from the cultural orientation in the Taisho period, literature oriented practice and the spreading and promotion of Irish modern drama in Japan. In Chapter two, it discusses the influences of national spirits of Irish modern dramatists on the works of Guo Moruo and Tian Han. This chapter starts with the times background of the generation of Irish modern drama, digs the national spirits shown in Irish modern drama deeply, takes the image of drifters in the playwright as the entry point and demonstrates that Irish modern drama allows Chinese dramatists burdening responsibilities of the times and pursuing the spiritual garden to find the conversion to spirits. The third chapter discusses the influences of Irish modern drama on the drama creation of Guo Moruo and Tian Han. This chapter discourses from three aspetcs of bright ego color investments and spiritual narration, the full-bodied symbolism, and graceful poeticized structure. It surveys the artist characteristics shown in Irish modern dramas and the works of Guo Moruo and Tian Han. Besides, it explores the influencing process of Irish modern drama on the creations of Guo Moruo and Tian Han.
