This MTI translation project is based on the English-Chinese translation of two chapters from Snow Falling on Cedar, a novel written by American writer David Guterson. It consists of two parts, the translation part and a critical commentary on the problems the translator has come across in executing the project. In discussing these problems, the translator draws on Eugene A. Nida’s theory of functional equivalence as well as other theories as guidance. Translation skills such as free translation and domestication which the translator has learned in class are adopted to resolve the problems. In the process of translating the source text, the translator has also tried to take into account the cultural differences between the source text and the target text in order to render the text in ways that are acceptable and comprehensible to Chinese readers.
