Watching movie is one of the major aesthetic activities in contemporarysociety. As a popular culture, it enriches people’s daily life, satisfies the public’saesthetic requirements and creates enormous economic interests for the movie industryin China. Thus, contemporary mass consumption society determines the fact thatconcentration on commercial interests is a new characteristic in contemporary Chinaand the development trend of Chinese movies. How to make movies popular andfavorable among the general public remains the first and foremost task for those whoare engaged in the film industry. The study on the content of commercial aesthetics ofcontemporary film in China, throws light upon the advantages and disadvantages in thedevelopment of Chinese movie from a more comprehensive perspective; also, theanalysis of movies can help probe into the direction held by audience towards filmaesthetics.The popular knowledge of commercial aesthetics in existing study achievementsrelies on the text study with a certain director or movies of a certain type as the studyobject. It aims to figure out the commercial characteristics in movie, preparing forcreating more movies popular with audience. Thus it is believed that the knowledge isnot comprehensive and systematic in terms of the study on commercial interests ofmovies. It is especially absent in analysis of the consumers and market position withfilm as a special commodity from the perspective of its transition from an artistic articleto a commodity. This paper is inclined to discuss the change of artistic language,consuming method and psychology of movie watching, through the analysis ofcommercial character of contemporary Chinese movie. It is the purpose of this paper tostudy the commercial aesthetic characteristics of contemporary Chinese movies, aimingto support theoretical support for creating more popular and more favorable movies that meets the aesthetic requirements of the general public and facilitate the creation anddevelopment of China’s film industry.
