Put forward by Yan Fu over one hundred years ago,"faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" are three of the most influential translation principles in China."Faithfulness" means that translation should be loyal either to the original content or to the original form."Expressiveness" means that translation needs to be readable and easy to understand. When the translator translates Adam Johnson’s novel The Orphan Master’s Son, the adequate transferring of the original information and the readability of the translation are the two main problems the translator meets. Thus the translator follows the principles of "faithfulness" and "expressiveness" from beginning to the end, and accordingly adopts quite a few translation techniques. By the translator’s translation practice, the translator finds the principles of Yan Fu are still very useful at present days.
