This paper reports the E-C translation of Confucius, the Analects and Western Education, byFrank M. Flanagan, an Irish scholar and educator. The paper focuses on the translating process,the difficulties in the translation and the reflections on the translation. The author, together withher collaborator did the translation of the first four chapters of this book. And the author isresponsible for Chapter1and Chapter3. This book presents Confucius’ life and his mainthoughts, the background of The Analects, analyzing the influence of The Analects to WesternEducation in particular. The objectives of this translation are to make Chinese readers know theresearch of the Western academia towards Confucianism and how Chinese traditional cultureinfluenced the Western education. It is expected that more thoughts will be triggered and thedissemination of Chinese culture worldwide will be further promoted.The translation is guided by Peter Newmark’s text typology theories. Following theprinciple of semantic translation, the author tries to be faithful to the original text and to conveythe accurate contextual meaning; at the same time, translation techniques such as addition andomission are adopted to improve the readability of the translated text. Meanwhile, the authorintegrates her own understanding of the text to be “faithful” and “smooth”. Prior to translation,we had built two translation memories. And a glossary is built with the assistance of a corpusanalysis toolkit Antconc. When translating, we used the CAT tool Omega-T.This report consists of four parts. Part One is the introduction, the background, objectivesand significance of this translation. Part Two conducts a thorough analysis of the source text,regarding its theme and subject, language features and main content. Part Three provides adescription of the preparation work, including the use of assistant tools and guiding theories. PartFour summarizes difficulties in the translation and their corresponding solutions with specificexamples. Part Five is the conclusion, in which both achievements and problems are stated.
